Porthgain. Brick stores. digital prints. 2007

The Britain In Pictures 2007 series was commissioned for BBC4 television and documented the experience of several British artists photographing Britains architectural landscape.

Their brief was for each artist to use digital technology in the documenting of architectural structures in which they had an emotional and aesthetic connection. Mike Perry choose 3 locations in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

PORTGAIN

In Porthgain, Mike ignored the grand picturesque brick factory built into the harbour, instead concentrating his gaze at the ruins of the smaller structures dotted around the area.

As well as captuing a meloncholic reminder of the past, Mike has treated these buildings as sculptural structures with a new life of their own. He quotes Donald Judd and modernist sculpture as his reference .

BRITHDIR MAWR

Mike chose as his second location the self sufficiency retreat at Brithdir Mawr in the Preseli Hills. His pictures exlpore the passion and ingenuity of the earth structures and homes designed to have minimal impact on the environment.

MINITURE CHAPEL AT PWLL CWN

Mike's third location was the miniture chapel built into the cliffs between Ffynnonofi farm and Pwllgwaelod beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. No one knows the reason why it was built although there are many myths. The structure is barely 3 ft in length and was sensitively restored by two local bulders after it had been damaged in a storm. Mike lit the inside with tiny candles and a cigarrette lighter.
