ABEREIDI 1-7

Mike Perry took the Abereidi photographs from the Pembrokeshire coastal path in Wales. These photographs represent a shift of emphasis from the rigid horizontal grid structure he adopted in his Beach 1-27 series, based around a stretch of coast in Sussex, England. Whilst he is still interested in the formal details of stone, water and the evocative play of surface, his gaze has shifted downwards away from the horizon, concentrating on the forms and material nature of the Irish sea and it’s rocky coastline .

Superficially the work resembles the seascapes of Thomas Joshua Cooper, but whilst Cooper’s images are rooted in the mythology and history of the location, Perry’s are firmly placed in the material nature of the specific place , it’s special ambiguities and subtle tonal gradations. Perry’s works are intended as formal explorations which reference the techniques of painting rather than offer historical or sentimental readings of a specific place.
